Do you have a fishing license?

 

           From the very early days of the church suffering persecution, the fish symbol has served as a rally cry for Christians.  It is understood, that after Christ’s crucifixion when Christians were persecuted, the fish symbol was used as an identifying symbol that fellow Christians would recognize, but

non-Christians would not!  Therefore, Christians could connect with each other through this secret code without revealing themselves to the oppressors.

 

 

Now, in the title of this article I asked a question:  “Do you have a fishing license?” We all are well aware that you must have a license to fish to be legal.  Without a fishing license, one runs the risk of getting caught and paying a fine.  Now, let’s turn our attention to spiritual fishing.  The early church symbol of the fish was indication of an individual or a family as being Christian.  In essence, this symbol served as their spiritual fishing license. Their new birth and relationship with Christ was evidenced by this symbol.

 

Jesus has made it clear to the church of today that we are to become “fishers of men.” It is our duty and privilege to share our faith with others around us.  Before one can share their faith there must be a commitment to Christ of their life.  What I’m trying to say is, one must be “Born Again” (receive one’s spiritual fishing license)  before one can go fishing for men.  Have you been “Born Again”?  Do you know Christ as Savior?  Do you have your fishing license and have you become a “fisher of men?”  Join the fishing club and than bring a friend along!
